Who’s Eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance

Also known as Medigap, Medicare Supplement Insurance is available to individuals 65 or older and those under 65 with certain disabilities or specific medical conditions. To be eligible for Medigap you must be enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), and not be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C).

How Medicare Supplement Insurance Works

While Medicare Part A and B covers a sizable share of medical expenses, it still leaves individuals responsible for out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. These costs can quickly add up, particularly in the event of hospital stays or extensive medical treatment. At AMS, we’ll help you find the right Medigap plan, one that gives you comprehensive coverage and peace of mind.
Medigap plans come in 10 standardized types, each offering different levels of coverage and premiums. Some have lower premiums with higher out-of-pocket costs, while others provide more complete coverage. Our team will help you compare medicare supplement plan options to find the best fit for your healthcare needs and budget.

Common Questions About Medicare Supplemental Insurance

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. You can apply for Medigap after this time, but may be denied or have to pay a higher premium.

A Medigap policy works with Original Medicare to cover costs not provided by the main plan. When you receive medical services covered by Original Medicare, you must first pay the Part B deductible. Original Medicare then covers 80% of approved costs, and your Medigap policy helps cover some or all of the remaining 20%.
Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. If you need prescription drug coverage you can opt for a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), or choose Medicare Advantage (Part C) with prescription drug coverage.
